World Premiere of
Schomburg: The Manuscript
Inspired by the life and events of Puerto Rican historian, writer, researcher, and activist Arturo Alfonso Schomburg.
New York, NY – La Casa de la Herencia Cultural Puertorriqueña, Inc. (The Puerto Rican Cultural Heritage House, Inc.) is proud to present the World Premiere Schomburg: The Manuscript, by Antonio Bones, on December 8 – 9, at El Barrio’s Artspace PS 109, located at 215 East 99 Street, in Manhattan. Three performances will take place beginning Friday, December 8th at 7:30 pm, and continuing Saturday, December 9th at 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm.
This theatrical production is inspired by the life and events of Puerto Rican historian, writer, researcher, and activist Arturo Alfonso Schomburg who spent his life collecting materials demonstrating the accomplishments of the African diaspora and the scope of Black history.
Schomburg’s production is directed by José A. Esquea, starring Andrés “Chulisi” Rodríguez as Schomburg, Mark J. Dempsey, Jeannie Sol, Iván Goris, Agar García, Emir Cruz, Jazmine Villegas, featured guest artist Malín Falú, with musical arrangements by Angel Rodríguez, production stage manager Christian Andrés Aponte, and A.B. Lugo’s script translation.
Schomburg moved to the United States in 1891 where he researched and raised awareness of the contributions that Afro-Latin Americans and African Americans had made to society. He amassed a personal collection of more than 10,000 items related to Black history and the African diaspora. He collected books, manuscripts, artworks, and more, highlighting the achievements and personal histories of people of color across the African Diaspora. His collections became the basis of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, named in his honor, at the New York Public Library branch in Harlem, a world-leading cultural institution devoted to the research, preservation, and exhibition of materials focused on African American, African Diaspora, and African experiences.
Schomburg’s legacy has served as an inspiration to Puerto Ricans, Latinos and Afro-Americans alike. The power of knowing about the great contribution that Afro-Latin Americans and Afro-Americans have made to society has also helped future generations in the Civil Rights Movement.
We hope you join us in celebration of his legacy, and the contributions pioneered by the Puerto Rican community of New York City, Puerto Rico and beyond!
