LA CASA’S
CUATRO MUSIC INSTRUCTION PROGRAM
La Casa de la Herencia Cultural Puertorriqueña (La Casa) has been providing Cuatro Music Instruction for decades in El Barrio/East Harlem. It is the only organization that has provided this cultural service in New York City for 42 consecutive years. La Casa’s Cuatro Music Instruction Program teaches participants how to play Puerto Rico’s national instrument, and its folkloric music with multiple instruments and luthiers, thereby, partaking in a folkloric tradition within the Diaspora that has survived for centuries. The goal is for participants to understand the Cuatro Instrument, its musical history, theory, melodic rhythms, and for their ultimate participation in La Casa’s Cuatro Music Ensemble. The Cuatro Music Instruction Program teaches participants to play the music and instruments of a complete Jibaro Ensemble as well as popular music.
Luis Rodríguez, our Cuatro Music Instruction Director has been with La Casa for the last 17 years. He spent 25 years as a Tresista for the late band leader Johnny Pacheco, and the Fania All Stars. This experience has allowed him to also teach Guitar Music at La Casa, as well as other Jibaro/Rondalla Ensemble music instruments. Luis also performed and recorded with Pete ‘El Conde” Rodríguez, Celia Cruz, Yomo Toro, Africando, and many other renowned artists. The Cuatro Music Instruction Program furthers the contribution of La Casa’s role in preserving the Puerto Rican Cuatro Music Legacy and its instruction in New York City.
